Cosmetic surgery may be necessary in a few cases, like scarring in accidents, but otherwise it is futile waste of money.

It is nothing but a means to satisfy the narcissistic and the hedonistic. Imagine what world of good could be done if the money was used instead for feeding the millions of kids starving all over the world.

Cosmetic surgery is also objectionable because it is going against nature. Nature in its infinite wisdom does everything for a purpose. Cosmetic surgery is fiddling around with nature. The consequences will not be good.

It is because of the social bias that cosmetic surgery is gaining undue importance these days. As you said it is only in the case of scarring or complete mutilation in burning or such accidents that cosmetic surgery is necessary otherwise for mere social acceptance it should not be done…especially to a society that is so flawed to accept people based on their looks alone.

I object to cosmetic surgery being labeled as a necessity; it would be better if we call it a matter of personal choice. Certain cases may make it an obligation for one, but to do it without any need is/may be flaunting what you don’t possess.

Being a conservative, as some may call me, what I believe is ”Beauty is skin deep while ugly goes to bones.” Some fashion world aspirants may deem it necessity, but the question doesn’t stand in totality. Personal traits always have edge over the physical ones and it’s the matter of choice what one opts for.

It is an absolute necessity. If there is no harm in undergoing cosmetic surgery all it can do is to improve how one feels about herself. If big boobs are considered attractive, why not go and get silicon implants. After all it is your body.

I agree that if you have the money to throw it around, getting big b**bs etc one can do it. But these are necessary if one is an actress. What about the rest?

I mean how can one throw money around like that when one knows there is so much to do in this world. I think only the hair-brained think that one will get a good husband by getting bigger b**bs.

beauty market is a huge thing. we spend hundreds of billions of dollars on cosmetics products and yet we want more and better. the market is growing and growing. likewise we see extreme things like breast implants, fat reduction surgery, height increasing surgery, facelift. but this is not going to make a person ever youthful. so what is the point?

One cannot say for others if it is a necessity or a sheer waste of time, money and health for the sake of vanity. For some, it is an absolute necessity and for others whatever I have said. There are some professions related to the glamour industry that makes it imperative for those involved like performers, actors, models etc to be in the best of their looks and charms. If surgery can help then why not?

For all you self-righteous supporters of natural beauty, let me ask you this, how many of you actually have had a girlfriend or a guy friend who wasn’t good-looking by normal standards??

how many of you would want to get married to a guy or girl in spite of a few obvious physical flaws??

and exactly how many of you have never gone on a diet to loose a few pounds?? you see we’re all hypocrites...

we say we believe in natural beauty but then again that only means we like to look our best and like to hangout with good looking people even if they have no brains...

so if pretty-faced dumb people can get coaching and tuitions to up their IQ why cant not-so-good looking people get a little help and get pretty??

I’m all for cosmetic surgery and I really think it has become a necessity because we as a society have really started to judge people biased by the way they look!!!

1. If looks had been everything, many of us would have been beneath the soil lying friendless.

2. This world is full of incidents where not so physically attractive person have proved to be the ideal couples.

3. We’re all over sensitive to the appearance we make ourselves subject to courtesy some real skinny creatures flaunting themselves on ramps and silver screen.

4. That’s truly a very personal point of view.

5. & 6. Now, after this useless explanation to Narcissists, I do believe natural, unadulterated beauty need no cosmetic surgery or stuff like that. Cosmetic surgery may be made use of where its mandatory or a real need. Else, it’s not a necessity at all :)

The title should have been: ”Is looking good a necessity?” Because cosmetic surgery is just one way of ”looking good.”

However, what is more necessary is not looking good but feeling good. It’s the ultimate aspirational end with all these.

I would beg to differ here Grace. Plastic surgery is not all about looking good. I need a nose job because my cartilage is bent and I have breathing problems because of that. I know a friend of mine who needed plastic surgery to replace the skin on his hand which had got completely burnt and was causing infection. Its about how people use it dear...

It is a necessity for people who are in services where good looks are a mandatory requirement, for eg. the entertainment industry and the service industry to some extent.

Though, personally I believe there is nothing more exciting than a person with a beautiful and exciting mind. Who wants a preening peacock next to oneself all the time? “ Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder….” But yes, the reason cosmetic surgery has gained popularity is because, people obviously want to confirm to the more conservative idea of beauty.

See, if anybody wants to change the way they appear, its fine. But everyone should know the limit. Like, for a matter of fact I need to go for rhinoplasty (nose job) because the cartilage is bent and I have problems breathing. When I do go under the knife, I would ask the doctor to make it look better. Who doesn’t want to look good. Get a doctor whome you can trust. That is very important. Debolina, there lies the thin dividing line between cosmetic surgery and plastic surgery, though the two are oftentimes taken as one and the same thing.

You and you friend had plastic surgery for health reasons.

Grace has made the very important distinction between cosmetic surgery and plastic surgery. That makes a lot of things clear.

When Pamela Anderson gets her breasts enhanced, this is cosmetic surgery. When a woman has her face, disfigured in an accident, operated upon, it is plastic surgery.

Plastic surgery is essential. Cosmetic surgery is for shallow ,men and women.

Life is small and so are the simple pleasures in it. We all have our special breed of simple luxuries. I like running barefoot in the mornings. I think having a cosmetic surgery is no big deal and if you feel happy about you should go for it. One of the ills of this world is that there are too many judgmental ******* and that makes life too hard to live.

I get sad when I read stories about jealous/spurned boyfriends/relatives throw acid on their women in India, hoping to disfigure these helpless people for life. Thankfully, we have Cosmetic Surgery to take the misery out of these people’s lives.

In some case when the disease take very long time like skin condition vitiligo wealthy patients like Mickael Jackson choose the cosmetic surgery option.

Agreed. Some skin conditions might need cosmetic surgery which would be justified.

But I would emphasise here on another point here. Holistic methods of treatment (like Homeopathy) believe that most skin conditions are not local problems, but part of a graver constitutional problem.

In such cases, surgically removing the skin lesions (or whatever) is hardly wise. It is like cutting off the branches of a tree, with its roots remaining intact.
