We are not going to retire with the iPhone, or are we? iPhone is the current iconic mobile whether or not other similar devices match it or better it. So I would rather own an iPhone 3G and keep it for some months than not having owned it all all.

If you want to own a phone for vanity, the Apple iPhone 3G is the one to go for. If you want to go for utility and features then the Nokia N96 is the best mobile phone that will hit the market. Lookwise too it doesn’t lack behind the iPhone.

totally agree with you here...

I was really taken in by the hype surrounding the first iPhone that I couldn’t wait for it to come to India...

Unfortunately, Apple decided to omit some very important cellphone features like video recording which is a shame because Apple really could have made the iPhone 3G the biggest cellphone ever...

For the time being, it seems to be just riding the hype and given that its a relatively new brand in India, people might still be more comfortable opting for the Nokia since it offers a better resale value and after sale service.

Also the fact that the iPhone 3G is going to be sold through carriers only will also hurt the enterprise since most Indian consumers like to switch carriers frequently.

I will probably go for the iPhone just to see how good it is. I have heard that it has some revolutionary features. On top of that I never had an touchscreen phone. I have seen some Chinese models with touchscreen.

NOOOO!!!!! This iPhone is prohibitively expensive! At Rs 36,000 it is extremely poor return for value. Why on earth should one shell out so much money and get tied to Airtel or Vodafone alone? Nokia still rocks for me.

Was watching the launch party in 9x last evening. Everything was fine except the price. While Apple has reduced the iPhone prices world wide, it has put a tag much higher than expected. This will also raise its price in the gray market but would still be much cheaper.

I don’t see the price tag is too bad given the phone comes fully loaded except perhaps for the camera which is still prehistoric at 2 megapixels without the ability to record videos. There is a phone in the Indian market already, the HTC Diamond. It is a gorgeous phone and though the storage is not as much as the iPhone 3G, it comes fully loaded as well. Great 3.2 mp camera. It’s not 3G but it’s priced at 26900. I would like to see what the 3G version would be priced at.

I am pissed of with Apple for pricing it so high where as it has slashed its price in the West. This is cheating and an attempt to milk the gullible Indians. This is not going to work this way for Apple. the iPhone is a flop show already going by the conversations I heard today while going to work and at work. I shall wait for the Nokia N96.

I was so enthusiastic about the iPhone 3G and eager for its launch. Now I am confused seeing the price and the features that are matched by other touchscreen phones in the market. The Chinese phones are cheaper and they have almost all iPhone apps and they look good too.

The touchscreen phone companies should give Indians a break. The HTC Touch and Diamond comes with AirTel connection and Apple iPhone 3G comes with either Vodafone or AirTel. But with no number portability, how can I change my carrier?

I have a simple suggestion for you all. If you want a piece-of-art, go for a painting by Hussain. Though they are also nothing more than shit, I bet a couple of them (the best ones, cuz majority of Hussain’s work suck too, just like the iPhone!)) definitely have it in them to beat the iPhone.

And for all those who want features coupled with good looks, wait for the Nokia N96. Though I’m satisfied with my N82 (I’m a cam person and a Nokia loyaliast, so Nokia N82 is the best one for me, yea, better than the N96, cuz it carries enough connectivity features to beat the DVB-H TV feature of N96), I feel N96 is a better option for people who want a REAL PHONE and not a phoney gadget (read: iPhone)

Bottomline: Technologically speaking, iPhone is nothing but an over-hyped piece-of-shit!

I agree with you Aneez. I had a Nokia N93 as my first Nokia phone and it was a very good one. It never gave me any trouble for a year and half before it was stolen.

Then I purchased a Nokia N95 and it was an absolute marvel. The upgraded Symbian OS software was very good, the CPU was fabulous (they downgraded it a bit in the N96) and the camera was awesome. Besides, the audio/video output TV and play videos or music. It could support many 3rd party software, some of which you introduced me to like the GoTalkMobile. Remember that? Gaming was a great experience because I could connect my TV and play games on the big screen. The phone never got hung even once. Connecting the net was as smooth as it can get. I could do almost anything with it.

Alas! It was stolen again within 3 months of purchase. Then I pre-booked the iPhone only to discover it to have some obsolete features like an archaic 2 mp camera that can’t record videos. That put me off and I was glad to see that Nokia announced the pre-launch booking of N96. I promptly did and within 5 mins got a call from my nearest dealer.

At Rs 37K the iPhone is a piece of shit as you said.

I would go for a Nokia of course.. I was initially taken by the cool looks of the iPhone, which I still find beautiful. However, for a person like me who messages a lot, the touchscreen would be a curse. Also, the LCD screens are known to break easily. The camera is bad. Just 2 megapixels.

I would definitely choose N96. But as Aneez says, N82 is still better than all these models, because it has the xenon flash along with 5megapixels. The only reason I may want to buy the N96 is the larger screen. However, the great camera and lesser price would definitely make N82 a better choice...

Completely agree with you Jaiyant. Now the grey market will be full of cheap iPhones smuggled in and sold for 15-20K. They cost between 14-16K till today (the old ones I mean).

I was one of the first guys to have had his hand on the iPhone on June 29 last year. I was ecstatic to own one and I found the phone simply mindboggling. In time I found that it had many utility features that were absent in other phones. But today I find myself being a victim of artificial hype. Take off the intelligent touchscreen feature, the core of the phone is quite medieval. But since I own one, I will go for the iPhone. Just to justify myself.

The iPhone is not just a phone. It is a music, video player, gaming device and what not. As far as the looks are concerned it is as sexy as a gadget can get. Now with 3G browsing the internet would be an experience with its wide screen and touch features.

iPhone- A STRICT NO NO

iPhone does not have FM radio and SMS forwarding is not allowed, no video capturing.

There have been lots of problems with the battery drainage of the iPhone and these don’t seem to stop. You will have to charge your phone everyday or twice a day for that matter if you are a heavy user.

Most important, the N96 has more storage capacity than the iPhone, which is be a minus point for iPhone for music buffs. Video calling is not possible on the iPhone.

A major , major talking point regarding the iPhone- The ”BLUETOOTH” on the iPhone can only be used for hands-free calling. No data transfer allowed between handsets or even with a computer with bluetooth enabled.

Ghosh, these are the few limitation I can think of right now. If still someone dares to ask me the question that i’ll buy it or not, get ready for hell mann.........

Though the iphone is a more classy stuff, I think in India,the Nokia phone is going to be the preferred product for the varous reasons mentioned here
