To a certain extent, it indeed helps. Just imagine if these fast eloping species are not put into a special class, we would not even get to know that we need to care for their survival.

We just can’t put the blame on any system if it fails to generate the projected results. Though the results are not as expected, it would have been even worse if not for the ’endangered species’ label.

Mere labeling does not help anymore.It only helps to enhance the G.K. of school children. Its high time the world took some concrete steps in saving the lives of the endangered animals.

Labeling a species as endangered will not help any cause unless there is awareness and active policy on conservation. We all know that the tiger is listed as a protected animal. But how many know that the Malabar civet (see picture) also enjoys the same protection as the tiger under Schedule I of the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972.

This means killing of a Malabar civet would attract the same penalties like poaching a tiger. However, these civets are seen as a threat and killed routinely without any thought by people for their skin or by farmers who see them as a threat. Their killings are not even turn any head locally, forget about being reported!

This is the same case everywhere in this world.

Therefore, just having an endangered tag is simply not enough. Awareness and education is extremely important to protect an animal.

Exactly! You are almost there. But try and imagine a situation where there is no such thing as the ’endangered species’ tag.

Not quite sure about your vision, but I’m dead sure about one thing- killing of Tigers would definitely outnumber those of Malabar civets. Everybody wants a precious game.

The tag does help- if the tag is disposed, then the Tigers would meet the same fate as the Malabar civet.

The thing is, people have developed a tendency to accept small crimes and loathe bigger ones. We need to educate the mass.

But the tag stays!

Umm...

Its like saying that,

”barring some you are free to slaughter the rest”!

Even if labelling raises some awareness, it does not help much.

True conservationists should do their job!

That’s it.

The animal kingdom is indispensible to the chain of life.

They help as long as there are strict laws and the implementation of the laws against killing of wildlife and endangered species. In China they have provisions to execute a person accused of killing an endangered species like the Giant Panda.

I would not say that I completely agree with the notion that having a few laws in favor of endangered species and then labeling some as endangered. Then lack of heart to implement the laws and not making people aware of the importance of conservation would make the label useless.
