We can win over the Taliban, only through food and education. Though military operation is an important part but for eradicating the thought of Taliban we have to address basic cause behind the problem (poverty and illiteracy).

well this is the blatant lie that chasing them with the guns will change the situation or end the terrorism. we know Guns can only suppress the revolt, but never the spirit underneath. history is the proof that guns and swords had never settled any issue but the talks at the end. If you think that chasing and killing them will put and end to terrorism, you are mistaken.

Who is asking to put down the guns? We should educate the common men there and provide food and security to them. When Taliban will not find the people’s support, how would they survive?

I will agree only to a certain extent.

The reason that a lot of them joined was because they had nothing and had nothing to lose.

It is a gang, exactly the same as the Bloods and Crips or whatever gangs terrorize the streets of LA.

It is all about drugs and money and instilling terror to become more powerful and rule more turf.

We didn’t go in guns blazing, in California or Illinois or New York to combat gang violence.

The Mexicans are not pulling the Dirty Harry on their drug gangs and those guys are chopping heads off and shooting up hospitals, doing almost exactly what the Taliban are doing.

So what is the difference? The difference is that it is not in our back yards, it is not our grandmothers hiding under tables to avoid bullets, it is not our daughters being kidnapped from their cribs. The bombs are not going off in our neighborhoods. It is the perception of them being ”OTHER”, of being different, foreign and alien somehow.

I don’t know if feeding them and teaching them to read will be as alluring as the power trip of being the toughest gang on the block, but it might reach some of them.

So I guess it comes down to saving the ones you can and hunting down the ones you can’t.

I somewhat agree to you. But don’t you think that those who take the guns have a reason to do it. And if we will be able to find out the reason and try solve it, terrorism will end forever coz we know well that violence get violence. while chasing them violently we can kill them, but will never put an end to the problems. the pre-requisite at moment is to know their problems than mercilessly chasing them. what say?????

The thing is that some people love violence, they get high off of it just like a drug. I have seen gang members jumping around and their eyes look all crazy and they are breathing hard and they are VERY VERY happy...after they just got shot at.

They love it, they can’t get enough. They are very proud of the fact that they terrify people, they see it as POWER.

Those kind of people can never change, they have to be locked up because they have broken minds.

Some of the members are not insane, but they get caught up doing insane things because they can’t get out of it without being killed themselves.

The Taliban seem to be getting the same enjoyment out of terrorizing and threatening women, because the more the women bend to their will, the more restrictions they put on them. No matter what the women do, it will never be enough, they will always push them more. They feel powerful when they can make weaker people totally powerless.

I never said to hunt anyone down and kill them ,but in case you didn’t notice the borders of the world are still being changed and settled with guns and if you think talking or education will change a males mind to war your as dumb as a stump

The answer to any conflict is only as strong as the will of the participants to change and most don’t unless one side of the males are brought to their knees

Yes and they are the ones taking advantage of the fact that they can use the uneducated ones to do their dirty work. They have taken over gem mines and quarries and drug smuggling, there is no way that they will let their dupes get an education, it would put them out of the crime business.

Panetta didn’t mean pack up the guns, ship them home, and bring in the water filtration and books and start building roads and bridges.

It isn’t an either-or proposition.

While there is a tactical solution to criminality, there should also be SIMULTANEOUS socioeconomic solutions to address the root cause of criminality.

But yes, over and above decimating their militant ranks through firepower, the poverty and social degradation in their communities should be eased. Otherwise, the insurgent anger will not die down.

Btw, no one seems to want to address the huge, widespread heroin addiction.

Given that there is high unemployment, the Taliban will have a recruitment angle so I feel till some extend ‘food and education’ can curb the growing menace.
