Will taxing citizens for carbon emission discourage pollution?

French president, Nicolas Sarkozy, comes with a new measure to tax citizen for every ton of carbon dioxide they produce. The measure is to penalize not just corporations but citizens for their carbon-fueled lifestyles. The French government hopes that as a result of the tax, more people will reduce consumption by taking public transportation to work instead of their cars. The ultimate goal is to reduce France’s contribution to global warming. Now the question remains whether it will reduce CO2 emission?

Is France going to use this money to create some device that reverses the damage we've caused to the environment? If not, I hate to break it to them, but the damage is done.

The only reason I'm against the whole global warming movement is because of all this unnecessary taxing.

Global warming/green movement = more taxes

Taxing is outright stupid. If you want to make people change their ways, INNOVATE and get something better. Taxing is a poor way to control things, it slows progress and prevents real breakthroughs. Instead of taxing people so they use less gas, get out of your stupid political office and start researching alternative energy. THEN I'll think you have actually made progress.

Shameless money grab. Buying carbon offsets does NOTHING for the environment. It just makes politicians feel nice, while they loot your wallet.

Has globalization taught you nothing? Companies will simply move production out of France to places without this carbon tax, just like American manufacturers avoided dealing with high labor costs, Unions, and environmental regulations by moving production to Mexico and China.
