Will paying students to do well in school reduce dropout ratio?

French Govt. is considering to pay students if they maintain good attendance records and reach performance targets agreed upon with their teachers, reward payments will be added to their class account. The government’s objective is simple: increase student motivation and class attendance and reduce the dropout ratio, as roughly 120,000 to 150,000 French teenagers leave school without earning a diploma or professional training certificate.

No but I think teachers' pay should be decided on how well they teach...

It should be up to the *parents* to decide whether to pay their child to do well in school. I did. I told my daughter that if she didn't do well in school, she should get used to being poor. She graduated high school with a 4.2 average. :)

The free market has proven time and time again to be a superior model for almost all goods and services. As such, a competitive, rewards-based educational atmosphere would provide incentive and motivation not seen in years.

It's definitely not a perfect idea but I think we do need to start entertaining more nontraditional routes of education. I think this one size fits all education really serves no one well.

my father used to give me money when i got to the top of class. rewarding kids with material gifts for school achievements to encourage them. the kid has to learn that hard work pays off. But this has to be between the student and his parents. what if the student is dumb and he knows he’d never get rewarded for his modest school performance? doesn’t that make him feel like a loser and may push him to quit school?

It’s not attendance rate that matters but quality education that
really matters.
