Will domain name overhaul revolutionize the Internet for better?

Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has voted to ease its strict rules on what are called ‘top level’ website addresses. Access to unlimited suffixes will give users thousands of more options such as.bank, .sport or even .haveagoodtime. There could even be individual or family websites with names such as .branson or .sugar. But buying one of this new generation of addresses off Icann will not be cheap - some could cost as much as £250,000.

The policy will also bring problems like cyber squatting. For example now Amazon has to buy thousands of more domain names like Amazon.amazon, amazon.shopping, amazon.electronics, amazon.books, etc. It is believed that with time the domain names will result in more complexities as people won’t be able to remember so many domain names, including the technicalities like suffixes.

As in real estate addresses, there shall be millions (even billions) of Internet domain addresses. This will lead to total confusion. I can imagine that the computer’s busiest feature shall be the ’Bookmarks’ menu. :)

I don't see how it is going to revolutionise the Internet. The Internet itself is one big revolution. In my opinion it would make domain name extensions more fanciful, but the overall flavour would remain the same. Also we see that domain name extensions have become less and less relevant today. What matters most is the content.

It will not revolutionize the Internet, but the Internet will become very personalised. We can have family names as domain name extensions etc. This is very exciting though................... What do you say?

Domain name extension will make it all the more fun to own a domain. It will make creating own family, company, hobby etc websites more attractive and add to the personality. Great innovative thinking. We must be more liberal with the Internet controlling.

I agree with most of the naysayers here. It is not going to 'revolutionize the Internet for the better'. It is just going to add more fun and might be able to carve out niches. That's all. Nothing more, nothing less.

It will be a disaster for small business owners for they will have to buy domains for every 'this and that' domain extension to save their brand equity. Only Search Engines will benefit along with every Tom and Harry who gets into the domain registry business.

I agree that business will suffer. If ICANN had to overhaul the domain system, it ought to focus on 1. Getting more multilingual extensions 2. Working with patent and trademark authorities the world over and sort out the Brand Name/Brand Squatting business.

This is no- news and I am sure ICANN will bring in some corrective measures.

If you want to revolutionize the internet as this preposterous headline says, then you will have to do something about SPAM - and by SPAM, I mean more than email SPAM, Social Network SPAM, Comment SPAM.

You also got to do something about domain squatting.
