India :
Private TV channels in India have been demanding long that the Information and Broadcasting Ministry of India allow broadcasting of adult programs in their late night shows. Doordarshan, the state-owned television company broadcasted movies for adults in the mid-80s on Friday nights.
Recently private entertainment channels have renewed their demand to broadcast adult content in a give-and-take bargain where viewers would be given the right to complain against poor entertainment content in exchange for permission to broadcast adult content at night.

Yes! Yes! Yes! Adults too have a right for entertainment just like the kids have. Men in especially are being shortchanged by the society in India. They work hard and when they return home in the evenings they are entitled to have some fun. Women in India have thousands of programs for them running everyday.

I would love to view some adult-themed programmes after I come back home from work and relax with a drink. I can understand why this has not being allowed because some people just cannot see the Indian culture deteriorating by the day.
Moral policing is still too much of a problem in India.

Men would definitely want to see adult programs on television because most of them have single dimensional minds.
Children don't sleep at 10:30 pm these days....
any have them have separate rooms with TVs installed.
How can anyone stop them from watching such stuff?

Why are there only 2 columns (agree or disagree) why cant there be a column called ’On the fence or something’. Anyway, I am assuming that the gov. thinks adult stuff on tv is not right (moral, cultural etc). But are they really preventing adult stuff from entering into the society by preventing adult stuff from showing on tv? I think there are many ways that ppl can access adult stuff today and preventing them from showing on tv at night might not solve the problem. So I would like to know what problem they are trying to solve then i can know whether preventing adult stuff on tv is solving the problem. on the other hand, if adult stuff is not shown on tv, what should adults watch?

Totally agree with you on this and have stated thus in a previous comment. Restricting programs is not going to change much as far as children viewing adult materiel is concerned.
And yes, why isn’t there and on the fence/don’t know/can’t say/un-opinionated column?

I agree with Garima and disagree with the proposal. If government wishes, let them broadcast it all the time.

I agree that the ministry cannot prevent adult stuff from entering into society by restricting it on TV. So if you want adult stuff you can easily access in through your local video library or on the Internet. Why do you need TV for that?
What are the chances of corrupting an innocent kids psyche if the kid accidentally comes across adult stuff when aired on TV? If the chances are only 0.01%, it is still a huge section of our future generation. I don’t think it’s worth the risk.
Saas-bahu serials are not the female equivalant of adult stuff.
The converse is also true: Adult content is not the male equvivalent of Saas-bahu shows. A lot of women too would enjoy adult content equally.

It’s a little naive to think that television is the only source by which children get corrupted. In today’s world kids are exposed to sex and violence everyday. Be it from the media, in school, at home and a measly ban on adult TV shows is not going to change anything. It more on how kids interpret this and we need to educate them on what is right and wrong rather than just banning everything.

Agree. As for kids not sleeping on time, then adults/ parents overseeing their welfare need to see that they do. The whole world cannot be run, just because the kid might watch it...if that is indeed true...then what about all the provocative ads, movies that are being screened?

All of the commentors on this story are Indian so I would really like to state my puzzlement at a couple of things:
1.How is it that the culture that wrote the book on religious experience through sex (kama sutra) considers ”adult” material offensive?
2. I never understood how one of the oldest and wisest philosophies in the world (Hindu), embraces a cast system while ”barbarians” such as the Europeans dont.
Please dont think of this comment as an insult. These are REAL questions.

Unfortunately because a lot of people believe sex is for procreation only and not for pleasure!! ( Poor Vatsayana, so much effort, now it has all come to a naught!!)

Does it say anywhere in the Hindu religion that sex is a sin? Or is it just Christian colonial residue?

Kama Sutra is not adult material. It is a treatise for sex. It is not erotica. It does not make you hot or drives you towards sex.
Every one on this earth follows caste system. Manu, a law giver, has divided human beings in 4 broad categories; the Experts (teachers0, the warriors, the businessmen and the labour class. You may call them by any name; they exist everywhere, in all countries. Only the name differs, castes and sub casts crop up.
Hindus life is for performing 4 obligations; Dharm, Arth, Kama, Moksha means duty (responsibility) towards self, parents, wife, childfren, society, nation, etc; earn, sex and get liberated from human life. Sex is a sacred duty enshrined in our scriptures. It is not a sin,
Christianity believes that sex is sin. Islam believes that Sex is for pleasure alone.

Thank you Manesh
First, the categories that you mentioned that Manu, devided the people in do not seem to say anything anout inferiority or superiority. More like personality classifications. So, I am still mystified about the culture that gave us numbers having a cast system.
As you mention, Hinduism puts sex in a very high spiritual place in contrast to the other religions. So how did India end up like the stupid europeans?

Adult content is itself not the question - it’s ok if a grown-up adult mind chooses it.
Would it be acceptable if if a public hoarding showed explict content? This is not acceptable even in western countries. Why? Because it is a public place where you can only put up content that has say the ’lowest common denominator’.
TVs in India are in the public places of homes. They are placed in the living room. There may be exceptions to this where TVs may be placed in bedrooms etc., especially in urban societies. I am talking of the majority.
If access to the content can be controlled in some way - like a channel that can be authorized by a password (or something similar), then it’s fine.
I am against placing adult content in a place a five year old kid capable of handling a remote can find it.
True, the kids can get corrupted by other sources. But TVs, unlike a computer or video is much more accessible to even kids of very small ages. How easy is it for a 5-year to access adult content on the Internet or through some other sources accessible today? By putting it on TV you are increasing the risk exponentially. Should we take those risks?
Yes, parents ideally should take up the responsiblity. But does everyone do that? There is a saying - ”It takes a village to raise a child.” The concept is of not just the parents but the entire community that brings up a child. So even if the parents fail the children still have a chance.
My point is as a responsible society where we already have access to adult content if you really want to have it, why is there a urge to get it onto TV?
An occasional and accidental view by a kid followed by explaination/support by an adult is also fine. But think, what happens if a kid comes back from school everyday and switches on the adult channel while the parents are at work or worse - watches it along with the maid/watchman/driver?
So the problem is not the content itself, but the ease at which it is accessible.

In India adult contents are considered as something very abnormal. But its not so, we are all adults and have every right to know or discuss on the matter. The only problem is that it may have bad effect on children’s mind. But why so? Because they will also grow up one day and become adult. And if it comes late at night, than I don’t think thre would be any problem. Rather, it will benefit to the ignorants in the conservative/interior area.

Absolutely correct. Tv viewing should be monitored by parents, and the interest should be inculcated in young minds to watch more channels like Nat Geo, History, Discovery. Though, being a parent myself i know its easier said than done!

Look friends, things are the same. It’s a matter of controversy only in India. Those in the oethr countries are also rational people with cultured society. If your kid is naughty enouggh and digs out everything, than she/he will do it from anywhere. As I can understand how things are done when you want it utterly. LOL!!
But banning the programmes just for not being able to control the kids is baseless, I mean not justified. I feel sad when adult females from villages are unaware of many such contents.

That is one of the misconceptions - that people from the villages or ”interiors” don’t know anything about sex. They don’t need TV, glossy magazines or Internet to watch sex happen. It happens everyday - the cows, dogs, chickens and wisdom handed down from more the experienced. In fact, I find kids from the villages are more educated about the facts of life than the very protected urban kids.

Of course, the government should allow. No point trying to stop the unstoppable, which is already there in our bedrooms through glossy magazines and the all-pervasive Internet.

I don't think it is a very good idea given the fact that in most Indian houses just like Bangladeshi houses television watching remains a family affair where all members of family watch a show together. There are enough adult material around and you don't need to work hard to find them. We can spare the humble TV at least.

Adult programs are fine, but make sure they are not graphic or with a tincture of pornography with exposure of body parts that could have been suggestive if the program shows sensitive issues like sex, love-making and prostitution.

It has been observed that those children with a lot of restrictions are the ones who indulge in all kinds of wrong activties because of unsatiated curiosity . Those who are from families that give them the correct exposure to adult stuff don’t get spoilt. So it depends upon the parent to develop the correct attitude towards adult life and its portrayal in children.
In any case, stopping adult programs on TV will not help much as there are many other sources for kids to get inforamtion about adult activties.

FULLY AGREE! I have a friend whose parents were very strict and he eventually ended up doing things that most of the rebellious kids would not do.

And just why not. Why continue turning away from reality. I mean is the Indian society still not capable of maturely handling questions concerning sexuality? If that’s so we give very little credit to ourselves.
There are millions of way to access adult content these days so keeping television out of the dimension accomplishes very little. But I’d still make a suggestion. Instead of having regular channels broadcast adult content over regulated time, we could have dedicated channels doing so. This would make sure that people who are not comfortable with the programs do not subscribe to the same.

Adult minds, basically in India, are always curious to watch sex related things, maybe ’coz SEX is the only topic that people still avoid to talk in public or hype up!!
So,definitly 90% will agree to it.
Talking about, childrens to watch adult content....can only possible if childrens are phisically mature enough to watch such content,or they lack their chidhood intrests, such as games, animations, horror.TV is not the only ways to get access to adult contents..if ur kid is smart enough.
Under a Govt. policy, right should be given to subscribe for adult channels.

Definitely no. Spare the television. If someone wants to enjoy adult material they can watch it when children and elders and not around in DVDs or the internet. No need to pollute the only whole family entertainment source. Don't embarrass the family.
