UN figures suggest that meat production puts more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere than transport.
The UN Food and Agriculture Organization has estimated that direct emissions from meat production account for about 18% of the world’s total greenhouse gas emissions while Transport accounts for just 13% of humankind’s greenhouse gas footprint, according to the IPCC.
“People should consider eating less meat as a way of combating global warming”, says Dr Pachauri, the UN’s top climate scientist, however, sees it more as an issue of personal choice.

The government can not force people to choose what to eat. Even scientists have confirmed that vegetarian food is better for health and logivity of life. Yet people enjoy their non veg food. Change has to be brought about in the mindset to change habits not by stopping production.

Given the cost of vegetables these days, meat eating is fast becoming an attractive proposition for most middle class Indians. If the government here clamps down on meat then it might be seen as an attempt to make the lives of Indians even more miserable in times of high inflation.

Governments certainly cannot force the citizens to eat veg-only food. Instead people can be made aware through various promotional programs about the benefits of veg-food. Maybe lovers of non-veg food can start off by making one day in the week only for veg food...I am sure that can’t be too difficult.
