Smoking signifies freedom of the individual to make ones choices in a free society, be it a common man or a possible future President of the United States of America. Obama may not be the first Presidential candidate who smoked, but he has potential to become one of the most influential one in this century. In an increasingly media sensitive environment, his smoking in public did not go down easy. Lest gains made by the decades old anti-smoking campaign end up in smoke, public opinion forced Obama amidst the election campaign to announce kicking the butt. The worried health professionals and anti smoking campaigners breathe easy but the message remains that a presidential candidate promising ‘change’ could end up becoming an icon for millions of youngsters who may take to smoking in his steps.

Yes, if others are allowed to smoke in public then sure. And secondly if a high dignitary is a smoker then all his time is public; so is he not supposed to enjoy his life even a bit?

Of course it can have some bad repercussions, but what doesn’t have

Smoking in public is nothing new, however, when it comes to the presidential nominee the things are not the same. he is an important personality and the nation follows him for everything. so a president or a would be president should avoid smoking in public.

See the freedom of choice is equal for every one, irrespective of person's reputation in the society. As US a free society, every person has the right of but as long as it is not hurting others. They have to be responsible about it.

those who oppose and argue against president smoking in public are no one to deny him freedom of choice. this is biased approach. He is the citizen of the nation and bears equal rights before being the president.

I’m in the middle because he sure does have the right to smoke in public and I’m not going to hinder that. But I believe it wouldn’t set a good example to a lot of people and it might send a wrong message. But it is the choice of the president, and no one should stop him/her from doing that if that is what they want.

Taylor, the platform does not permit fence sitting.

Even though you have stamped your agreement with the argument extended but the comments added place you in-between.

Yes, of course!! Why not??

If the image of a smoking dog (clearly depicting a Presidential candidate in this article) is acceptable to the general public (read: the ones sharing their valuable views in this debate) then a smoking Prez or Presidential candidate (in public) should not attract raised eyebrows by anyone.

Or... is that Presidential candidate, err, dog in the above picture smoking in its private cabin?? Forgive me, if I have interpreted the picture wrongly.

But anyway, I’m against the idea of curbing anyone’s freedom of choice, be it a Presidential candidate or a dog.

Just try to see it in a different perspective; Prez smokes in public while its banned in a country. If it isn’t so, I don’t see any reason in not allowing him to smoke or raising any debate over his choice to smoke publicly.

I do agree ... although I haven’t smoked in more than 20 years, I really do disdain the ”politically correct” criminalization of those people who use tobacco products. The health facts are in, have been discussed at great length, and it’s unimaginable to me that there could be someone in the USA who remains uninformed of the dangers. As I understand it, Mr. Obama is having a difficult time kicking the habit, and to vilify him for it only indicates that there are many too many busy-bodies with not enough to do with their time. Perhaps if he were a felon ... might he be shown a little more respect and tolerance? The hypocrisy makes me gag!

Not only he should be allowed to smoke, but also applauded for his courage when smokers around the world are increasingly targeted by rabid non-smoking rioteers. Smoking is not illegal and a president can do what is not legal. If there is a ban on smoking say in a town hall where he is going to address, then he must respect the ban.
