NASA’s Mars Phoenix lander touched down in the far north of the Red Planet yesterday and has started sending first pictures of the unexplored region. This flight of the $457 million Phoenix can answer a big question – Is or was there life on Mars? The high 50% failure rate of all Mars missions so far has eaten up a lot of taxpayers’ money. However, it’s considered very important by the science fraternity to explore the Universe for signs of life and ensure our future survival.

Yes. Even if we were sure that there is none, it's important we explore everything existing. Many might argue that as we haven't received any signals from outer space, the whole exercise is a complete waste of time and money. But I'd say, the only reason we haven't received any signals of life in the Universe apart from Earth is just because we haven't yet tried to reach out. These are baby steps...you have to see it to believe it!

Aliens are figments of our imagination. Persistent though our efforts may be, I dont think we’ll ever find multi-cellular life in any part of the universe. If there are aliens on Mars, were they hiding when the Mars missions were underway?

Animal along with plant kingdom have occupied the planet earth similarly there must be ‘organisms’ residing in other planets as well but surely not as advanced as the humans are.

If we go by evidence, Mars seems to be the only planet conducive to life. However, recent findings show that Mars is a ’lifeless and cold’ planet. And like you say, Pooja, there might be organisms less advanced than life on earth. But, we are pushing our imagination too far by expecting intelligent life outside earth.
