Obama upholds ‘military option’ against Iran: Should the world expect ‘change’ in US foreign policy?

Apparently, Obama sounded like Bush in his speech before the American-Israel Public Affairs Committee pressing on the fact that Iran is a grave threat and the military option is “on the table” to deal with Iran’s nuclear program. It was a complete departure from what he expressed earlier, where he showed willingness to meet Iranian leaders and other American adversaries “without preconditions”.

He said:
“I have no interest in sitting down with our adversaries just for the sake of talking. [A]s president of the United States, I would be willing to lead tough and principled diplomacy with the appropriate Iranian leaders at a time and place of my choosing if and only if it can advance the interest of the United States. That is my position. I want to be absolutely clear. I will do everything in my power to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, everything in my power to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon – everything.”

That is what the US is all about. there are hardly any changes in the US foreign policy, no matter whosoever comes to powers - democrats or the Republicans. SO even if Obama comes to power, that's far a mile stone for him, there will not be so many of changes that his golden phrase " A change that you can expect" tells us about. so it will be not a matter of surprise if Obama toes Bush's agenda of war.

And the chameleon started changing its colors. this is the change that Obama is arguing since the beginning. bull shit!!! this is really the complete betrayal of what he had said earlier. don't trust the b***** he will do the same time and again. we don't want war anymore and he is gonna push us in the same quagmire. Nope we don't want that to happen again...

Obama's proposed weapons against Iran, options to strike on table say the reality - no change in the US foreign policy. and may be right as the "deeper isolation and steeper sanctions hasn't change Iran's truculence." Would such tactics have changed Hitler's behavior in the 1930s? Why would it change that of another madman like Iran's Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who calls Israel a "stinking corpse"...? hence there remains no other option.

the question of policy change comes only if obama wins and that is a difficult take for the time being. this is too early an assessment. And you know what the major reason that led down Hillary is changing her words since the very beginning and now Obama is doing the same. And if he will keep doing the same, he will meet the same fate as Hillary did. So the question only arises if Obama wins otherwise not. so no hassles for the time being...lets wait and watch.

People have begun imagining Obama almost as a president-elect; thanks to the primaries war that was highly electrified due to the fact that his opponent was an ex-white house occupant and a woman. There is a lot to wait and see, as the ”charm” of the competition to win the party nomination is over and the real fight to win the presidency is yet to begin. Only that phase will bring out the real Barack Obama for every one to judge his policies.

Obama does not really sound like a person who would steer away from the present foreign policy of US. It would be interesting to see if he really goes by his words and launches an attack on Iran

Please do not make comparisons between Obama and Bush. They are polar opposites. Obama is not threatening Iran as Bush administration did and this is merely the spin of the conservative media who can think that Obama might change. Obama won't start WW3 like the Republicans have been and would continue to do. Obama will bring us peace and prosperity again, and he has millions, most Americans backing him.Get with the program or keep whining in fear and complaining, but you will see the best America (Ever) is right around the corner from the worst - like the lotus rising from the mud.

this is surely a great thing that Obama comes out with. And this a matter of pride that, indeed, makes me glad to see that this man is wise enough to realize that the interests of Israel are far more important than the interests of the American people and he will not bow to the liberals and negotiate with Iran. He is fully aware that Israel has to be protected, regardless what will be the price for the US. great!!Keep it up!!!

yea you see. When Obama will win the white house, you can bet there will be big time toasting and glasses linkings in Pyong and Tehran. Four years of reprieve produce no result... no good use of 72 useless sanctions and threats of more sanctions... more harsh sanctions, more and more... but not more. There's a sucker born every minute, unfortunately this ones gonna be the pres.

yes korey you are right. this is not the right time to ask this question. the reason is simple: a republican will be a republican always and so do their policies and the path to white house is tough get going for Obama. The republican election machine is going to tear him apart, and appeal to the fears and bias of the same pack of geniuses who elected Bush. that is the point.

They are all the same, be it Bush or his most likely successor- OBAMA. So, to expect any sort of drastic change in US foreign policy is nothing more than a figment of some most silly imagination. Iran should be prepared and geared up to face the might of US as nothing is gonna change.
