Is Slumdog Millionaire a ‘poverty porn’?
Media allegations have accused the film of being ‘poverty porn’ and also that glamorising slum life appeared deliberately placed to play on the liberal guilt of Oscar voters. “Slumdog grit draws boos from Hollywood” was the headline on one story that reported some of Mumbai’s poor were offended by representations in the film.

“They are making out that India is a Third World, dirty underbelly, developing nation,” carped Amitabh Bachchan, one of the Bollywood’s leading film heroes. Some Mumbai tabloids denounced it as a “slum slam” that has given the Poverty Tourism a monolithic pop-culture hook.

Indian politicians are rejoicing, perhaps because they realize that without them, India’s slums, and this movie, just wouldn’t exist.

Dear Folks,

Plz go through the interview with Danny Boyle in ’Sight and Sound’.

http://www.bfi.org.uk/sightandsound/feature/49511

See how they cheated the officials at the Taj to complete the shoot as they were kicked out when the officials realized what the intent to shoot.

See his idea about Indian music and cows in the street.

A Benz car appears in a scene in the film. Boyle asked to remove the trade logo of Benz from the car as he thougt Benz the compney doesn’t want to relate to Indain poverty.

Recognition for SM and ,previoisly, for Aravind Adiga’s ’White Tiger’ is no mere coincidence.

Think about it...

Yes I agree. I add elites and rich who are in the same wavelength when it comes to poverty.

It is a high stupidity to expect justice from the culprits themselves.

Read one guys justification how the british director fooled Taj authorities.

A small guy with full of shit asks for Amitabh’s autograph? it is not an insult to the Bollywood?

Before Dollars there is no need for SALT.

Yes. DEFINITELY.

It panders to the basic instincts of pity and fear, for some profit.

I’m not Indian but I feel oppressed with that film.

Those Western filmmakers cashed in on a topic on which they applied the Western definition of the great pipe dream.

Grit?? I find that grit erroneous, doing disservice to the people of Mumbai.

I say shame! to Indian authorities who allowed the filming of that movie on Indian turf.

SM is nothing more than a ’boy meets girl-boy looses girl- boy gets girl’ story. the major difference is that the boy is 5 or 6 years old when he fell in love !

I wonder why nobody is celebrating the success of ’Smile Pinky’, a documentary.

How many of you know about ’Born into Brothels’, another docu which won the Oscar in full length docu category. It is about the children of sex workers at Sona Gachi, the red street in Kolkata, and the film makers efforts to get them education and means of a good living. It has darker scenes than SM, shocking scenes. Here it not an NRI in Uk who dones the role, its all real- real people, real names, real situations. We wont celebrate this film... will never have the courage...

Yes my friend. I agree. Have you heard or seen Kamal’s film ’GUNA’ and ’MAHANADHI’ and in Nayagan (in HIndi Nayak) he marries a sex worker. In GUNA his mother and foster sister are sex workers and that will impact him strongly make him mentally ill and he in return search for purity that is through marrying a women equallent to a god. In MAHANADHI he will find his daughter in Sona Gachi. Terrible scenes. Both the films as usually not box office hits. Our people fear about truth and reality. They prefer to live in fantasy. That’s why commercial films get uplift. Regards Ramesh

Allegations referring to the SM being ’poverty porn’ is not the brainchild of media people. In fact, it’s crystal clear that Western eyes love to locate negativeness in developing countries and project them in exaggerated manner.

I have seen SM.It has nothing exceptional other than so-called determination of a lover to find his lost GF.What was the need to blend this story with comntroversial elements?

It’s time to rise above ”Oscar obsession”.If Western world is so interested in honouring ”Shit” what has made us to accept their homour with open heart?

It’s time for likes of Danny to project ”Shit” spread in Western world in a such way that it wins all prestigious nominations across the globe including Oscar!
