Is Nobel Peace Prize to Obama Justified?

US President Barack Obama has won the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009. Is he a worthy winner? The Nobel Committee hailed Obama’s extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between peoples. Citing his work to rid the world of nuclear weapons and peace efforts made to bring peace and stability in the Mideast, Mr Obama was chosen ahead of the likes of Morgan Tsvangirai, Prime Minister of Zimbabwe, who had been a favorite for the award. Is Obama the right choice for the Nobel Peace Prize?

I think this is just a trick to get a sitting american president to visit Norway.

What a wonderful example of naive skepticism.

He's an American President who's almost gone a year without starting another war. That's quite an achievement.

Nothing against Obama, but it really seems a bit premature like some people said, seeing as Obama hasn't been in office even one year.

Giving this nobel peace prize to obama is an insult to great people who devoted their whole lives for peace like Nilson Mandela. Besides, this award was given to a war criminal before (shimon peres) so i won’t be surprised even if they gave it to Benladen
lol even ghandi didn’t win this prize ...this world has ceased to make sense a long time ago ...
ah well .. congratulation Mr Obama

Nope, what has he done so far to deserve it? and I mean something concrete? we can’t give everyone a noble prize for their good intentions... we need real action!!!

Are now Nobel prizes given to serve some political interests?

I am really surprised that he has been chosen!! If he could be awarded Noble for inconsequential and insignificant international diplomacy, why was Gandhi not awarded Noble for his tremendous contributions that added new dimensions in the word humanity?

Like others I am also not hesitant in asking ”He won! For what?”

One gentleman has stated that he has won for his ”unshakable commitment to diplomacy, mutual respect and dialogue as the best means of resolving conflicts.”

Like to tell that gentleman that this are empty words and nothing else...Big words devoid of meaning in our times !!

This is the first time anyone has received a Nobel prize for zero achievement.

Even Yasser Arafat signed a peace treaty, even though he never implemented any of the conditions he was supposed to.

With this award, the value of the Nobel Peace Prize drops to nil.

Not only do I agree, I am overjoyed by it. If at all anyone should have got the Peace Nobel for 2009, it was none other than Barack Obama.

I have penned my thoughts here.

People who differ like Michael Davison here have obviously missed the woods for the trees.

Cheers to the Norwegian Nobel Committee!

Personally, I do not understand why they did not give the prize to liberman or netanyaho ...after all, they have clearly demonstrated that they truly is into making love not war...what more can you ask for in a political leader? oh well maybe their version of love is kinda creepy but can’t we award them for their good intentions? err or is it clear that their intention is not that good?

Jayanta:

Presenting a Nobel Prize for Peace according to what one is expected to do, rather than what one has actually done, cheapens the prize and the value of the work done to achieve the prize.

To date, obama has done nothing to deserve such an award and giving it to him makes a mockery of those truly great people who came before him: Mother Theresa,
Albert Schweitzer,
Martin Luther King, Jr. and
Nelson Mandela, to name just a few.

Barack Obama has done nothing to place him among such distinguished company.

This award is purely political and based on expectations. How can a president who can’t even get a universal healthcare law passed in his own country deserve a Nobel Prize for Peace?

If that’s called not seeing the forest for the trees, then I’m guilty, but a lot of people think and feel the same way I do.

I will elaborate in a few hours. Actually, currently working as a daily wage and semi-bonded labourer.

Point 1: A Agnesë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu was not Mother Teresa on debut as a nun. She became MT after years of service to the poorest of the poor. The world saw her good deeds, awarded her the Nobel.

Same is the case with the rest of the names you took.

Barack Obama on the other hand was elected to the presidency because he was different and promised the world that he will ensure that mankind (Africa, Palestine (:-P), etc) that right to what could not escape from Pandora’s box.

He had the power of the commander in chief of the world’s one only hyperpower on debut.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has actually placed a bet upon him by conferring him the award for 2009.

Now, it remains to be seen whether the first black US president with an Islamic-sounding middle name who has raised such high hopes for the world commune, after this honour, would embarrass himself by not doing (or at least trying to do) what he promised, or insinuated to promise.

Barack Obama’s personality won’t allow him to fall in his own self esteem unlike his trigger-happy predecessor.

The prize was just a preemptive effort on the part of the rest of the mankind (meaning other than Americans and Israelis) to make him deliver what he promised.

In his own words, Obama said that the Prize is not for recognition of his deeds, but a call for action to do what remained undone so far.

Liberating the Palestinians from the Goliathian terror and atrocities of Israelis is one of them.

Needless to say, you missed the woods for the trees.

Since when is the Nobel Prize a casino? It was founded as a means of recognition for achievements, not a game to reward people for their potential. That’s why I disagree with the choice.

It may surprise you to learn that, as an absentee voter, I voted for Barack Obama–but am unimpressed by his performance to date. For the most part, he has merely continued with the policies of his predecessor. All of his attempts at initiatives, both at home and abroad have been met with resistance.

As for your last paragraph comment, the only ones who can ”liberate” the Palestinians are the Palestinians themselves–simply by complying with the conditions of the Oslo Accord they already signed. Your comment just shows your lack of understanding when it comes to this conflict and makes me wonder how much you understand of any other issue, as well.

Once again, if he was awarded the prize ”on spec” for what he might do rather than what he has actually achieved, it’s a violation of the principles and criteria on which the Nobel prizes were established.

Personally, I don’t care if he’s black, white, brown or purple with green polka dots... he has achieved nothing so far to justify the award.

@Michael:

No, not casino. Obama is relatively a safe bet. The Peace Nobel has been used as a tool to push him to do what he already promised. Therefore, the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 this time has been put to the best use possible keeping in mind the needs of the world at this hour.

That’s all.

Obama for sure does not deserve this honour, it’s not only prejudiced but also a premature decision made by the Nobel committee. Though I think the discussion is moving in a wrong direction, because the issue here is not who won the award but on what basis has the committee decided the candidate. As a recipient of the award, probably Obama was humble enough to state that he did not deserve it; but the way the award was decided leads to a lot of scope of discussion and authenticity of such awards, which are now slowly and gradually tilting from deserving to appeasing policy.
I have started thinking a lot about global peace and harmony, betterment of lives of people, eradication of hunger and poverty from planet earth and a global society devoid of factionalism, communalism and racial discrimination. I am sure someone from Nobel Committee would take a note of my intensions and guys don’t be surprised if you see my name in the nomination for the award sooner or later!

;-)

Cheers

I find it absolutely amazing that people are suddenly so knowledgeable about what it takes to win a Nobel Peace Prize. Seriously...why were all of you hiding this knowledge before today?

what I find it absolutely amazing is that you think people are dumb and ignorant about what it takes to win/not win the nobel peace prize. they were not hiding their opinions about this prize before because this is the first time they award a president for 14 days as a presdident. It’s rediculous, what did he do to deserve the nomination in two weeks?
you have the right to agree or disagree but u don’t have the right to mock others’ opinions.
u cud of just asked the same question to urself to realize ur contradiction, u agreed with this award, so ur so knowledgeable to agree with this award now? or only people that agreed with this award are knowledgeable and others are not?
you have all the rights to agree and we have the right to disagree and we all are free to express our opinions :)

Nobel Prize is overrated. the discussion does not worth it at all... just ask Jean-Paul Sartre and he’ll tell you that its just a false prize. The true prize is the achievement itself. Obama has done nothing so far, well except talking about doing something good, and not waging a new war.
