Is Michael Jackson still the icon he was?Michael Jackson turned 50 yesterday on August 29, 2008. Five of his solo studio albums have become some of the world’s best-selling records: Off the Wall (1979), Thriller (1982), Bad (1987), Dangerous (1991) and HIStory (1995).

He broke down racial barriers, transformed the art of the music video and paved the way for modern pop music in his own country. He holds the Guinness World Record for the world’s best selling album (Thriller), 13 Grammy Awards, and 13 number one singles in his solo career. These achievements gave him the title King of Pop.

Since then his flashy and reckless lifestyle that led to many controversies like the child sexual abuse allegations, bankruptcy etc has resulted in a steady downfall in his career and gradual fading away from public life.

Michael Jackson being Michael Jackson would remain the icon he IS forever. The man is already a living legend and legends never die or fade away. They stay as legends. The way he changed the music industry is unparalleled.

He is bigger than Elvis Presley or Jimmy Hendrix or Kurt Cobain or John Lennon. When they are celebrated so much even today as music legends I don't know why some people think of MJ the way they do. He is a revolutionary entertainer.

Michael Jackson lost his status as a youth icon when he tried methods to change his skin colour. Then being accused of child sex abuse didn't do his image any better. The sale of Neverland meant that he lost a major part of the MJ brand.

Michael Jackson is a real American hero. Sorry, he is not just an American hero. Wherever he went, fans poured over, fainted standing for hours in the sun just to get one single glimpse of the man. He is a phenomenon. He is still capable of pulling in massive crowds with his appearance.

He had it in him to become a legend. MJ threw it all away with his recklessness and misplaced lust. Having said that, his songs will still remain one of the most entertaining. As a person, he wouldn’t be recognized by most as an icon.

Jackson was always unique and his dancing skills are absolutely incredible. I don’t think any other singer has got such extraordinary dancing skills which will keep him an icon forever.

Michael Jackson will always be a brilliant musician and a performer. Nothing in this world can change that, not even the allegations or the fact that he changed his skin colour. How do all these factors matter when the man has given us such incredible music? I loved him as a kid, i loved his songs, his dance, the video everything. I went mad when I saw him in a live performance. Even now i occasionally listen to his songs and get connected to them. The man’s a star and that status can never be taken away from him.

He is unbeatable in charisma, fan following and talent. He might have had a rough time in the last ten years or so but he remains one of the greatest youth icons of all time that today's celebs would find it next to impossible to match up to.

Whatever his fans might think and say today it is a fact that Michael Jackson has lost the kind of revolutionizing appeal that he had once upon a time in his life. He is a wasted guy.

Bob Dylan need not do crazy things as he did and he is still a much loved legend.

As a small kid I was simply blown off with Michael Jackson's Thriller. Then as I grew a popular Indopop number by an Indian or Pakistani singer singer had this line in its lyrics - Main Bhi Fashion Karoonga, Michael Jackson Banoonga. That shows how much impact Michael Jackson had in the world music industry.

If someone knows the song, can you please tell me. Thanks.

That’s the point. The allegations do not make Jackson any less a Star. On the contrary they only add to the mystery that wraps this man.

His music has been loved by millions across the world and he’d remain a superstar for his achievements come what may. I have been a fan of several of his tracks - Black or White the most of all - and would have liked to see him rocking for years to come. That he let personal antics hamper a brilliant career otherwise would haunt his fans forever.

Michael Jackson is not the Michael Jackson if he is not Wacko Jakco.

His charms lies in his crazy behavior and though he made debut on the professional music scene at the age of 11 as a member of The Jackson 5 and began a solo career in 1971 he was no where near the megastar he became when his voice finally broke down and started his crazy ways like burning his hair, living in a oxygen chamber etc.

But he took his crazy ways a bit too far to land in some real soup.

Still he is the icon he was during the 80s.

Well Gagandeep, I totally agree with you on MJ being a star. I am among the millions who love him and his tracks. However, the allegations and antics that you’re talking about are exactly the ones that I believe have tarnished his reputation. And therefore, MJ being an eternal icon is always debatable.

I used to love Michael Jackson once. But after I learned that he was abusing young kids I started to dislike him. I wanted him to be convicted and sent to jail. What business he had with kids in his bedroom especially a cancer patient whom he helped with money for treatment.

Michael Jackson is the the only entertainer in the music industry that has made an industry out of non descript music only channels. MTV owes a lot to this man for making it a multi-billion dollar enterprise; and so do its clones all across the world.

Michael Jackson's success was like a flash in the pan that lasted for just about a decade and then faded away. It is like the phenomenal success of Guns 'N Roses and then fading away to oblivion. As there are millions of GnR fans today, there are millions of MJ fans still tapping merrily to his numbers.

The Jacko legend is forever. It will never fade away and suggesting something like if he is not the icon he was is foolish. Play a Michael Jackson number in your music player now and you will find your feet automatically tapping.

He was.. Yes.. but he has two stikes against him:

[a]this is not 1980 s

[b]the famous or infamous case of pedophilia against him
