President Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan seemed very angry and frustrated while threatening on Sunday to send soldiers into Pakistan to fight Taliban militant groups operating in the border areas.
Mr. Karzai said, “If these people in Pakistan give themselves the right to come and fight in Afghanistan, as was continuing for the last 30 years, so Afghanistan has the right to cross the border and destroy terrorist nests, spying, extremism and killing, in order to defend itself, its schools, its peoples and its life. When they cross the territory from Pakistan to come and kill Afghans and kill coalition troops, it exactly gives us the right to go back and do the same.”
The call is likely to fuel tensions between the two countries still struggling to stem terrorist activities across border.
But President Karzai has a valid point and radical events across the border have irritated both Afghanistan and the western forces based in the region. Islamabad, honestly, has failed to tackle Islamic militants crossing over to Afghanistan and launching attacks on Afghan installations and there is a need to provide Pakistan with an appropriate answer in order to solve the problem. It remains to be seen how Pakistan reacts to the warning and one feels Islamabad would be very unhappy with Kabul and there is a lingering danger that Kabul and Islamabad could head into a diplomatic tussle if not a military one over terror issues.
If Pakistan had been a good neighbour, it would not have allowed Taliban/Al Qaeda to thrive on its territory.
Pakistan says any action on its land by US/Afghan forces would be tantmount to violation of its sovereignty. What about the security of Afghanistan? And of the USA? Sources say bin Laden is holed up in Pakistan.
