Is it time for China to discourage ‘one child’ policy?

It’s been almost three decades China implemented the ‘one child policy’. The very move to curb the increasing population resulted in gender imbalance, female feticide, less young work force, aged population…However, the Chinese Govt. has realized the gravity of the situation and have relaxed the one child policy allowing (depending on the condition) some couple in Shanghai to have a second child. So, is it the right Chinese move at the right time? Should China end one child policy?

Communist Party of China has done great job by implementing the one child policy properly. It has resulted in the prosperity of Chinese people. China should continue with this policy.

China is reversing a policy that should have been copied by Africa, India and south America. It will be a great threat to the environment.

I agree with Hiten,

The world expects the ones who were responsible, reasonable and logical, the ones who made all the sacrifices to make the world a better place, to now sacrifice all they worked for to support all the ones who where irresponsible, unreasonable and illogical. That is insane!

Educated, intelligent people do not have more children than they can feed, clothe, educate, and get medical attention for.

Uneducated, superstitious, religious people will have children that they can’t afford then let them die, sell them, or throw them out in the street and continue having more. They cause the spread of disease, violent crime, shortages of natural resources and overall misery for the rest of humanity. They don’t have a right to burden the world with their irresponsible breeding.

In fact western countries have always shown dual character on this issue. When China was implementing this one child policy they criticized them for violation of human rights now west is alleging them for neglecting the world environmental concerns.

This is not the proper way to check the population imbalance. In fact China should have checked the female feticide rather than allowing the people to have children. It will affect not only the China but the whole world.

You are right, that gender imbalance will affect the whole world not just China. India also has a huge gender imbalance because of sex selective abortions and female infanticide. Both are patriarchal societies that highly value males and have little regard for females.

When there are large numbers of males who have no hope of ever having a family or passing on their genes, they will become volatile, a danger to themselves and society. They turn to drugs, rape, organized crime, risk taking behaviors, anything to prove their masculine prowess.

It happened many times in history when the rich old men took or bought up all the young women for their harems and left all the poor young men with none. Those young men were a ready army with nothing to live for so they fought savagely. A small army of desperate men can overwhelm a large army of family men any day.

That is the real reason that polygamy was outlawed in all civilized societies.

The world now has an estimated shortage of 160 million females, how much longer can we allow patriarchal societies to devalue females before we are all in trouble?

No doubt gender imbalance is a serious issue but there are other ways to check it. Allowing the people to have more than one child in a country like China will add to the world problems. I think UN should intervene in this issue and countries like China, India and African countries should be forced to adopt the one child policy.

They had a huge population of desperately poor people who could not support themselves and could not support their aging population either. The young people now make a thousand times more money, so they can support themselves and the older generation. After that hump of current elderly population, then it will stabilize.

I guess lots of people would rather see whole villages starving to death and dieing of thirst and disease like in Africa.

No body is going to die of starvation in China now. China has capacity to feed all the people even if there is an increase in the population. BTW, i don't think there will be any unprecedented increase the population now.

Having more children will not correct the imbalances. But add to fresh problems owing to population increase. They should continue with the one child policy and work towards it as Nuya opined

China is not going to allow more than one child in ordinary circumstances. The government policy is very much clear. They will permit more than one child in special cases. So it's not going to create any problem.
BTW, why every one is criticizing it now? The westerns have been criticizing the China for violations of human rights for not allowing the people to have more than one child.

China has nothing to do with the world opinion on this issue. They will do what ever they find good for them. They implemented the one Child policy despite of criticism for violation of human rights. They will allow the people to have more than one child!

The one child policy should be implemented through out the world. Our planet cannot cope with an ever spiralling population. We have limited resources.
It may lead to world conflicts.
