Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has called on Colombia’s FARC rebels to end their struggle and release all hostages. It’s surprising as Chavez recently pressed to consider the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia as a legitimate army rather than a terrorist group. FARC rebel movement is in tatters after the death of their leader, Manuel Marulanda. Chavez said, “There are old folk, women, sick people, soldiers who have been prisoners in the mountain for 10 years. The guerrilla war is history. At this moment in Latin America, an armed guerrilla movement is out of place.” But will FARC listen? Colombia believes, and has sufficient evidence, that Chavez is financing the FARC. However, the world has enough reasons to take Chavez’s call with a pinch of salt.

Frankly speaking I am on neither side. Chavez's appeal will do nothing. I really don't think that FARC will stick to his appeal whatsoever. secondly, Chavez is playing politics. Ever since his relations revealed with FARC he want to come out with clear image.

whatever, one can take it the way s/he likes it. But is the appeal not enough to show that Chavez want peace and stability to come to Colombia. that is more important i think. As FARC is in the worst of leadership crises ever, I think this is the right time to bargain with the armed fore. May by at the time of crises they will come out with a compromise.

FARC has caused havoc in my country, murdering innumerable and kidnapping many influential ppl to keeping them hostage to bargain with rebels in Colombia custody. I admire Chavez’s appeal to FARAC to release all the hostages, but some days ago I read post here that Chavez gave $3bln to Support the rebels. In that condition i know he can end it as well, they're his puppets.

this is, I believe, a ploy that is intended to take some relief for sometime from the Columbian forces. this appeal will, beyond doubt, end in nothing. there are rare examples in history when the rebels have left their weapons for peace. therefore it's hard to say that farc will call renounce its war. May be the democratic experimentation by Maoists in Nepal has proved to be a learning curve for President Chavez.

there are so many nations in the world who support the rebel groups and fund terrorism and also dictate morality, why is Venezuela bad for doing the same?

The US needs to adopt a non interventionist foreign policy and stay out of this kind of crap. We have been propping up the Colombian government for too long as it is. The only reason this conflict has been going on for 40 years is because the US has interfered in it.

I agree with you. At the same time will say that Colombia is not an autonomous country like the US. There are many factions fighting for control and it is not as simple as labeling one side terrorist and the other the good guys.

Chavez is similar to his counterparts in Iran. They pretend to be like Turkish cock who walks in a self elegance but are defamed. They try best to come out clean in the public eye , but supports some rebel activities against west to keep them busy all the time. The reason is they could not afford to have strong and pro western country in his border like Iran cannot afford a strong Iraq in its border. They use and support the terror activities against their neighbors, but later the situation appears that rebels overstep them and thus they come as a trouble to their supports. Chavez is entangled in the same puzzles.

It’s difficult for me to believe that people are defending or supporting FARC financially. FARC is a criminal and terrorist organization, you would have to be pretty much an ignorant and in denial to not see this. I don't agree with all the U.S foreign policies, but this is one I support, FARC should be terminated and all their hostages released. I cannot believe you people are defending Venezuela and Ecuador for actually letting FARC have bases in their countries.

I don’t care about what ppl say but I appreciate Hugo Chavez for taking an initiative and playing a vital role by seeking a resolution not unlike Colombia patrons who help them with the supplies of Arms & "Military Advisors" with annihilation objective.

FARCs Hostages are equiv to govt.’s prisoners. it's always been a Two-way street with Govt backed Right Wing Death Squads by far, better Armed & more proficient. poor people caught in the Cross-Fire are victims of both sides. Changing conditions dictate Evolving Strategy where Common Sense exists.

this game Big Daddy plays very effectively. Iran Venezuela, cuba...and many more who do not align to its policy and interests are always on its target. they are bad only because they do not say yes to US commands. to a great extent, I agree with Siavash. US does not work as a liberator, but as a veiled oppressor. the role that it played in Ireland, is never seen again. If US is willing and will intervene forcefully will sooth the Latin American countries. But that gain for in the LatinAmerica will be a great loss to US, hence US plays a divide and rule politics. So instead of Chavez, ask US to stop play politics.

Yes!!! No one doubts that, do you? If yes, let me remind that some of you seem to forget that FARC funds itself through drugs and thugs that Chavez has given his full to. Chavez supports many drug-peddling organizations and that he is just trying to antagonize Colombia through his own support of his puppet, Correa. However, Uribe had an opportunity to strike a huge blow to FARC and he took it, which was his prerogative. Colombia has previously tried to negotiate with FARC and has even offered amnesty to members of this worthless, genocidal organization all to no avail. Chavez needs to worry about his own country instead of getting involved in the affairs of other nations...

As far as I am concerned, the answer could be both yes and no. President Chavez is a very astute leftist leader and this is again proved by the way he has called on the FARC to end their struggle against the Colombian government. It may sound surprising but here in lies Chavez’s brilliant political gamesmanship.
By calling on the FARC to put down their guns the Venezuelan President wants to get into the hearts of the Colombian people and at the same time is paving the way for a thaw in the fighting between the leftist guerilla group and Bogota which would give ample time to the rebels to get over the loss of their founding father Manuel Marulanda before relaunching their military campaign.
