Has social networking overshadowed Porn on Internet?

Porn no longer rules the roosts on the Internet. A recent study by Bill Tancer, a researcher at Hitwise, reveals that the Social networking sites are the hottest attraction on the Internet, dethroning pornography and highlighting a major change in how people communicate. This is the major shift in the past decade, as surfing for porn had dropped to about 10 percent of searches from 20 percent a decade ago.

Porn used to be the most visited region before networking. It’s, in a way, good and is commendable. So, finally INTERNET finds its best of expression in networking, rather going astray to provide carnal satisfaction to porn lovers. Great indeed!

Right, social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook have changed the face of the Internet. They are now the next big thing after email, search and instant messaging. People understand that interacting with others is more exciting than looking for porn.

I agree. Social networking has now replaced surfing for pornography as the biggest cause for working hour loss in organizations. That's why sites like MySpace, facebook and Hi5 is blocked in offices..

Social networks are now becoming more and more federated.
With privacy features giving more control to users today then previously, it is eventually going to lose its charm.
If I want to see the pics of a cool dude in his album and if he has restricted them to be accessed by only accepted contacts, then I would lose interest.
It can frustrate people after a certain period of time.

Definitely sites such as Myspace and Facebook are giving not only the porn industry a hard run for their money but killing paid dating and other classified sites. The social networks stand for freedom and power to users.

To some extent yes but not completely. Porn would always have a market share. It is there to stay and so are social networks. There are now even adult social networks and even peer-to-peer file sharing couldn't kill the porn industry.

Yup.

There seems to be a shift in the surfing-tendencies of people over the years. Gradually people have started wasting more tome on social networking sites than searching for pornography.

Obviously the fact that a great number of social networking sites provide access to porn, intentionally or otherwise, must be given its due consideration. I have little doubt that certain percentage shift has arisen cause of this precise reason.
