Has recession reduced the birth rate?

Economic crisis has wider impact than one can think of. Everyone takes it as a bane but it’s a boon too, though fewer the cases may be. Recession has led to the fall in birth rates in US by 2% in 2008; the biggest drop in nearly four decades. A new study out Sept. 23 from the Guttmacher Institute suggests that the timing is not a coincidence; and women reported waiting to get pregnant later than they had planned. The research surveyed 947 women between the ages of 18-34 who have household incomes under $75,000. More than 4 in 10 said the economy was affecting their decision about having children. Does this mean recession is instrumental in reducing birth rate or is it mere a coincidence?

Oh Yes! Definitely, people are thinking about planning a baby. Recession plus the fear of job loss has been an added factor.

Raising a child is not an easy job. And when we have lack of money, it becomes even more difficult. Its always better to plan for the future rather than repent later.

Wish it could do this in India. This country badly needs the birth control.

Yes! I have hardly observed a new-born in my neighborhood in the past one year. I think this the effect of the recession only.

Its not recession but awareness of people towards contraceptives that has caused the low birth rate.

Its better to have control on the child birth than cry later for the extra expenditure, specially in the 3rd world.
