Has recession made people more disciplined?

Recession has forced people for showing restraint over money and possessions. A life with less wealth, less sex and more self-imposed discipline has become more attractive because of the economic downturn. Not only this, the present financial crisis has dealt a heavy blow to the idea that human fulfillment can be thought about just in terms of material growth. As a result, a growing fascination with the lives of monks and nuns and the rules by which they live has found place in people’s heart.

No.

What it has been doing is curtailing the opportunities for the good old ways that may be construed as undisciplined.

So, in the future, at post-recession, it will still be the same attitude - just add money.

Less money, less desire, less sex...it is quite obvious if ppl won't have enough money they will show restraint. but how long? how about the situation when recession will be over. this makes a sense but as long as the recession remains. ppl will be back to old ways wen it will be over.

this could only be preached but in real world there are so many other things that are more important than so called Discipline. one of them is hunger. why you all forgot one need to eat and survive before being disciplined! isn't it?

i wish he has given this sermon to the MP's and all the high class ppl. Bcoz most normal people are generous and know the meaning of self sacrifice, whereas MP's seem to only be aware of the help yourself, and grab all you can ethos.

Disciplined!!!! I doubt if ppl here r in their perfect senses! didn't u read about increasing domestic violence and frequent shootouts in US. recession has created mess than making ppl disciplined. job loss, less money, losing houses, stress and trauma...has led to a breakdown. I don't see if recession has any +ve effects on anyone...

It’s not self restraint at all. It is imposed discipline. People can’t follow the imposed rules. It may lead to unrest among the people.

Recession has affected people badly, especially those who lost their jobs. They are forced to put restrictions on their day to day behavior of spending. And it is obvious that things will never remain the same. When this will be over, it definitely will be a party time.

I think this will definitely help some people to develop the habit of saving. They will learn that some amount has to be saved for uncertain circumstances.
