FIFA suspends Iraq: Is it justified?

FIFA has placed a year-long suspension on Iraq after the government dissolved the executive board of the Iraqi National Olympic Committee and its federations on corruption charges. FIFA is accusing the Iraqi government of interfering in football affairs. However, FIFA’s action is a severe blow to the spirit of the game, especially when the team recently won the Asia Cup.

FIFA is somehow trying to act as UN for some reasons...what a nice way to ruin a nation of hopes... i ask if there can be anything as delightful as watching Iraq playing in the world cup? will the world not cheer for the nation that has been destroyed for oil worth many, many trillions trying to represent unity and strength is still up and strong. this is the strength of sports and there's no way some lame excuse from politically motivated FIFA can ruin their chance of standing the world showing Iraq that has not not been seen since the US led INVASION.

Sports and politics should not mix. This is not an issue that can be decided by FIFA or any sports commission...this is beyond their jurisdiction and this is so ridiculous to see war torn nation denied of its rights. Shame on you FIFA!

This is a very regressive move which will only serve to increase Iraq’s isolation. The embattled nation desperately needs some hope and the Iraqi football team which was playing well was the perfect option to deliver that sense of hope. But with one short sighted gesture, FIFA has paid put to all these plans.

if Iraq dissolved the National Olympic Committee on corruption charges, what is that to do with the game. Play the game, do not hurt the spirit of the game. this is too much you know. when saddam ruled Iraq, players were not given the opportunity to to participate in the games, and now the the iraqi govt. is doing the same. so does it mean that saddam has left the ordinate thinking for the Iraqis to face?. whatever, but this is too hard with the team that has recently won the Asia cup.

This is another China-Olympic boycott story. Why can’t people understand that sports and politics are different and that the basic rule in games is the sportsman spirit. Really shameful!

When the going gets tough, the tough gets going... this DOESNT apply to Iraq ... I am surprised at the role of FIFA... It was suppose to promote sports rather than promote US-led Agenda ! When will the West give a chance to the already sufferers of the country? First it was the SADDAM and now its the ’outcast’ treatment by bodies like FIFA !

Well Bijoy it seems that you have posted it on the wrong side. I severely condemn FIFA for something so irrational like this. I mean how on earth can it be justified? Then why doesn’t it ban USA? Bush being such a nice man? Arghh, stupid politics. I would never understand it.

That is a fair call but what about FIFAs stance on Poland. They have the rights to jointly host the Euro 2012 with Ukraine and that is exactly why FIFA has chosen not to suspend them from the membership. It reflects bias in some form for the governing body of world football. The entire Polish football hierarchy was found guilty of corruption so why spare them as a member. Why not rob them of their hosting rights?
