Does India need 'freedom' from Kashmir?Since the bloody militancy began in Jammu & Kashmir in the late 1980s for independence from India, nearly 100,000 people have been killed in Kashmir alone. Hundreds of thousands of Kashmiri Hindus were displaced. This has ruined the local economy of Kashmir and bled the Indian exchequer of billions of dollars.

Protests have started again following the Amarnath Shrine land row where Muslims in the valley have renewed their demand for independence from India. Booker winner and prominent Indian writer/activist Arundhati Roy remarked that India needs independence from Kashmir as much as Kashmir needs independence from India.

In Kashmir, history has failed to integrate a people, who are still craving for an identity.

Amarnath row is about land, something which the Kashmiri’s hold onto fanatically .

A Times of India article concludes Arundhati Roy’s remarks with,

“India needs azadi from Kashmir as much as Kashmir needs azadi from India.”

After having pumped billions of rupees to placate the Kashmiri people, does India need azadi from Kashmir?

The question needs to pondered upon.

Are we forcibly holding onto a land that does not want to be a part of the ’unity in diversity’ identity.

Is it all about religious affinity and development and betterment of lives has nothing to do with it.

Whether a Kashmir needs azadi from India, let the Kashmiris respond to it.

A plebiscite may throw up some answers.

How it jolts the Indian union is just another gravity.

If religion is the basis of the demand of the separatists then Jammu & Kashmir should be trifurcated into 3 parts - Ladakh, Kashmir and Jammu.

Then all the Hindu Kashmiri Pundits who fled the Valley (when a systematic ethnic cleansing was carried out by the terrorists with the help of local Muslims should) be brought back and then after a time period of say 10 years a referendum should be held.

The time period is necessary because it would give the Kashmiris a chance to think for themselves in peace that whether to be out of the Indian Union would be beneficial for them.

Cetrainly not! Would you leave your kid, if she/he is the reason for tention in the family? Kashmir issue is cetrainly a big problem, but don’t we know that it is just because of an outsider’s interference. Kashmir belongs to India and can not be separated. We should not escape but should deal/face the situation. We should come for the rescue of the small piece of our country and its native folks.

I would have loved to tread a middle line, but sadly there no option here but to agree or disagree.
The issue I think is what ’Kashmir’ and its people need and not what India or Pakistan or local politicians need? It has been wounded and injured for too long...
The wound should be diagnosed, attended and healed.
I agree with Ravinder, we should try to know what people of Kashmir want...

Not agree with and Ravinder. Think, Kashmir is separated from India. What next? Is terrorism or separatist movement going to stop? No.. Its going to continue and will you let Hyderabad, and many other pockets of India that has Muslim majority to get separated? I think it is high time we get out of this secular drama and get unified to deal with the real problems the country is facing.

There is no point in holding on to territory when you have to pay such a huge price for it. Indians are dying every day in Kashmir fighting terrorists. The Muslims of Kashmir are hostile towards Indians and as known crores and crores of rupees are being spent everyday. India also gives huge subsidies to Kashmiris and this is coming in the way of development in other parts of the country.

Arundhati Roy is an insane woman. She is hysteric and she has no locus standi to comment on behalf of all Indians. There should be laws to prevent anti-national statements being made by people on media and in public places in the name of freedom of speech. She must be charged with treason.

No way we can let Kashmir slip away from our hands. If we had to do this we should have done long time back.... now we have paid the price to retain it and sacrificed fine young men too.

I hate to see some prominent people like Ms Roy making such irresponsible statements.

Neither does Kashmir need freedom from India because without India it cannot survive and will be devoured by the Pakistanis, nor India needs freedom from Kashmir as Arundhati Roy remarked.

India just needs freedom from such scumbags who call themselves intellectuals.

All India needs is free Kashmir of Muslim Kashmiris. They can go to their lovers in Pakistan who would give them the grand title of Muhajir II. These people are neither from this side nor that. They are just barking dogs.

Kashmir has been an integral part of India and there is nothing unique about the so called Kashmiriyat. India is a diverse land and there are unique cultures in different states and regions. It is ridiculous to even think that Kashmir deserves freedom from India.

Throw Arundhati Roy in the same room with the Hurriyat goons fighting for azaadi for a week and lock it and then see if that changes her mind. If that doesn't work throw her in the same cell with a few jehadis in jail. That will definitely work.

Why is India letting herself to bleed so much by the Kashmiris? They can do a world of good to themselves if they diverted the resources of keeping control of Kashmir and maintaining it to their development elsewhere. Kashmiris will never ever accept to be a part of India.

I can understand your sentiments given the history of Bangladesh where it fought and got independence from Pakistan. But then the case of Bangladesh and Kashmir is entirely different. Pakistan is trying to do a Bangladesh in Kashmir by fanning violence in the Muslim majority state. India is not going to let that happen.

The common Kashmiris want to be a part of India. Why should India let go of Kashmir for a pack of terrorists? They are a malignant tumor. Will you cut off the tumor or cut off the part of the body with the tumor? The choice is yours.

The answer is to let the people speak for themselves. Decades of lingering on with the issue has brought nothing. Kashmir has not gotten integrated with mainstream and economic development remains a distant dream because of terrorism.

We promised Kashmir a referendum long time ago and this is the opportune moment to do so. Even if it leads to trifurcation of the territory then so be it. Key is to let people decide their own destiny. Holding sham elections and imposing will on citizens just to uphold ego of the State is no solution to the problem.
