Do video games really influence violent behavior?

Repeatedly, video games come under the hammer for promoting crime and violence. Oasis star Noel Gallagher has revived the debate by directly linking recent youth knife crimes in UK to video games. We already have games showing extreme violence. The popular Nintendo Wii too has invited controversy with its latest game called “Frat Party Games: Beer Pong” that simulates the real drinking game and it’s approved for kids as young as 13-years-old.

I am a hardcore video game fanatic, but with a subdued heart I will have to agree - the force here is really strong.
Yes, the action oriented video games and movies maybe influenced by the ills of the society, but both these only perpetuate the entire circle bringing it back to the society.
The only reason that games are more prone to instigate crime over the movie bit is the fact that, we’re controlling what is going on in the game. Killing people or anything, and a flickery adolescent mind is likely to feel the urge to go out and try his hand in real life – we do it for the other games, don’t we?

Yes, they do instigate violent tendencies and it is something that countries across the world are seriously looking at. While art mimics life, those influenced by art and unable to comprehend the difference between fiction and fact that surrounds them, like young kids do get influenced. They at least imitate it blindly.
In the past year alone there have been cases in the US and Germany against the WWE Raw Vs Smackdown game when in two separate incidents two kids apparently lost life mimicking it. While i’m not a huge follower of the games, there is just an example

Videogames affect people too much.. they act like videogame heros and also harm others. some people are too fightened to play videogames and some enjoy. this means some get highs with violent games.. no doubt

Yes. I have seen that those who regularly play violent video or computer games get more agitated and aggressive, taking on the energy and excitement to imbibe the gaming fervor of ”kill, kill, kill!” and ”annihilate.”
In real life, these people also tend to bully others more.

Although video games are seemingly influencing violence, how can you credit it to that? When you are talking about WWE Smackdown vs Raw, it was on TV and people were acting that stuff out WAY before videogames published it. But you also have to judge the mind of the person playing it. Some people have, nothing of offense, weak minds. They are more prone to behaviors suggested by their ’hero’ or whoever they may look up to.
As to Grace’s comment, you may be right about gamers seeming to bully kids more it is the total opposite where I live. There are probably a set group of 20 hard gamers in my town and in school. If anything we would be the ones being bullied by the sports jocks and stuff.
But to wrap this up, if people think that violence has indeed caused violence around the world, what about before videogames? Oh yes of course, there is another cause of violence then and now they blame it yet again on another avenue. I’m also sure in ten to twenty years we will yet again see another blame on something different for the causes of violence in our society. But it is our nature right?

Well, whether you like it or not, but the truth is that video games do not influence violent behavior; on the contrary, its the video games that are influenced by the ills of the society.
Those who generate this hue and cry and blame video games should channelize their energy towards the betterment of their respective societies and stop blaming the gaming industry.
