Can outlawing fat people curb obesity?

A health care debate is going on in Japan, similar to one in the US. The Japanese lawmakers have made obese people illegal and have set a maximum waistline size for anyone age 40 and older: 85 and 90 centimeters for men and women respectively. In Japan, already the slimmest industrialized nation, people are fighting fat to ward off dreaded metabolic syndrome and comply with a government-imposed waistline standard. So, will making fat people illegal help curb obesity?

You can't (naturally) change your physical features. You can affect your physical health and stay fit and not fat, though. Totally different.

'Japan has some of the world’s lowest rates of obesity — less than 5 percent, compared to nearly 35 percent for the United States.' And yet they are taking these harsh punitive measures. And these figures embarrass me.

It makes sense. If other tax payers are obligated to pay your medical expenses, they get a say in the lifestyle choices you make.

It's either freedom and personal responsibility, or socialism and government mandates, make your choice Dem-fanboys.

So when are they making being too skinny illegal?

Yes it makes sense until you realize, there is a very small % of Americans that are pro athletes. There is no excuse (outside of the very marginal few who actually have a medical condition... claiming fat gene doesn't count) for the current obesity issue in North America (yes us Canadians are getting fat too!).

If the government is paying for your health care, it's reasonable for them to tell you what and how to eat. That's just how it works.

The government get's the right when you rely on them for your healthcare.
