Can atheism save the world from vital conflicts?

Former PM Tony Blair believes the fundamental issues of the 21st century are more likely to stem from religious than political ideologies. The conflict in 21st century will be religious or it will not be at all. Many people will feel that the answer to religious wars is less religion, not more of the “right” sort. However, as the secularism is losing prestige in the places where wars are actually under way, there’s not enough of it about to quench the fires. Also, if secular common sense doesn’t start disputes, what makes us think it can end them? Perhaps the kinds of dispute for which people will kill, and die, will always have a religious dimension.

I agree...People around the world are fighting on the basis of religion, culture, etc. The thing is that nobody wants to change themselves and give space to the people with different set of beliefs. This is causing the trouble for all.

yes people are fighting over the religion but religion is also a force that binds the people. Religion is the force that prevents a person to commit the offense. While an atheist cares for nothing. So pure atheism can never be good for humanity.

Yea, religion binds people together, it has bound the Taliban and Al Quida together quite nicely.

Religion is the force that causes people to commit offenses. While religious groups only care for the members of their own religion, atheists care for everyone. So pure religion can never be good for humanity.

Atheists care for every one? Atheism is more popular in he communist countries, should we believe that communists care for every one.

I don’t see why we shouldn’t believe it. The only communists countries are China, Cuba, Laos, North Korea, and Vietnam. I don’t personally know any Laotian or North Korean people and All the Chinese, Cuban and Vietnamese people that I know live in the United States. I have never asked any of them about religious affiliation, but all are perfectly lovely people as far as I am concerned. Do you have any reason to believe communists are uncaring people?

"Religion is the opium of masses". Religion is the root cause of most of the conflicts. So, atheism is the only solution of religious conflicts.

Yes why not!! The ideology of "no god" can only help people think about something else other than their religion and the actual global issues can be addressed

I don't think that atheism is the solution. More appropriate would be that people become more tolerant towards other religions and the hate speeches should be treated as a crime.

To be tolerant towards other religion? It is never possible as every religion has it's own philosophy regarding the origin of life and God. The religious conflicts are bound to increase un till we tell the people the scientific phenomenon of origin of life. We need to tell them that there exists nothing like God.

As for now, atheism is certainly the way out. Why believe in a God or creator who is also responsible for creating so much evil in this world?

Religion is the way of living the life. It is true that there are major world conflicts due to religion but it doesn't mean that atheism can solve those conflicts rather it will worsen the situation as people wouldn't be afraid of any thing.

The reason religious people have no fear of dieing and will not hesitate to kill is because they believe there is a paradise waiting for them after death.

Atheists know there is nothing but the 1 real life, so that makes life valuable and not to be wasted. Also, they will not be in any rush to die.

Agree, all the peaceful countries are the least religious. Secularism the only hope for peace. It is already evidence, there is a track record of secular vs. religious countries. Religion has had thousands of years to bring peace to the world and it has failed miserably. Only fools continue to repeat the same mistakes over and over and expect a different result.

Religion is the main cause behind the troubles that the mankind is facing today...Have a look at any religious nation and see that how badly are people suffering due to their beliefs and customs.

People kill each other in the name of religion. Kills animals and children in the name of sacrifice. Has burnt thousands of brides in the name of custom. Don't allow women their freedom in the name of culture.

Hindu-Muslim riots have already killed innumerable men in India...

How much more bloodshed do we want to see in the name of religion??

What has theism/atheism got to do with vital conflicts in this world ? Its distortion of religion for selfish motives that is causing all the trouble.Today the truoble makers are causing harm in the name of God, tomorrow they will do it in the name of something else if you remove the concept of God. This has got more to do with human nature than any religion.

Also one can be spiritual without being religious. So you need not be an atheist to bring peace to this world. God is a personal concept. Most people find solace in the concept. Without God they will not find life worth living in this already disturbed world.

It has everything to do with the conflicts because the promise of heaven is being used to get people to commit horrors.

It is an empty promise because it costs nothing and no one will ever come back from the dead to expose the perpetrators or exact revenge.

There is no other imaginary item that can be used to fool people into committing atrocities. Without religion it would have to be a real item used to bribe people to kill for you. Money, land, power etc. and if you can not deliver on that promise you run the risk of them turning against you and possibly killing you.

So you see it is a real risk as opposed to an imaginary risk....people do not take real risks so lightly.

Its a pity that people are understanding religion or God as the root cause of all conflict ! Any religion or spiritual teaching in its purest form preaches love and universal brotherhood. If a handful of individuals are comitting crimes under the name of religion or God do you blame the miscreants or the very entitities that have nothing to do with all these conflicts ? A person who understands God or religion in the true sense will never get carried away by promises that claim that killing innocent children of another religion is going to take him to heaven. So who’s to blame God or man who is polluting the concept of God ?

A FEW MISCREANTS! Are you kidding me? Religion has been the impetus for more killings and human suffering than all other causes combined. It is NOT a few misguided souls, it is the institution its self.

All that ”True sense of religion” metaphysical bullshit is a big part of the problem... you think you know what is true and others don’t that’s where the fights begin. Thousands of years, and millions upon millions dead because of religion... enough is enough.

If there is a God, then it is his fault!

How can the God be a personal matter? When the religious belief of one affects the people surrounding. It's just an excuse to say that religion is a personal matter. It was never and will never be a personal matter.

Yes I choose to say that a few miscreants are creating turmoil on this planet. If you observe, you’ll see that the common man that makes up the majority of the population of any country does not want any wars or conflicts. It is some notorious religious and political leaders or terroists who are misleading the masses by imparting wrong knowledge and influencing people. Though they are small in number they are able to motivate huge masses in the wrong way because of thier influential skills. Its high time the common man woke up and did something to stop the spreading of hatred, intolerence and violance. But alas! We don’t want to do that, we just want to blame the institution itself!

Yash,

Of course God is a personal matter, or rather,it is meant to be. I don’t understand why the religous beliefs or actitivites of one religion should affect another ? If there is mutual respect and tolerance religion becomes a personal matter. Its only because we have learnt to be intolerant and disrespectful towards other religions that one religion is affecting the other.

Thousands of years worth of miscreants is not a small number. Almost every genocide in history has been because of religion. Religion keeps people poor and in misery so that those at the top can profit. The pope, the clerics, the televangelists etc. all live like kings while directing their minions to suffer so that they can get some relief from the suffering in heaven. Women are made to suffer the most because of religion and because they suffer, so do their children. Enough is enough.

Excuse me but please don’t say that atheists care for nothing; to presuppose that human morals are not innate but divinley instilled in people by the reading of their religious texts is patently wrong.

Atheist have all the moral characteristics of a religious person and the insightful reflections of good and bad, but without the arrogant presumption of God on their side.

Atheists prove to be good community members and just as compassionate and sesitive to the suffering of others, but with a rational and reasoned perspective with out all the bronze age ignorance, fairy tales and rediculous morals like stoning people, male and female circumcision/mutililation, selfish cynical prophets manipulating groups of people and marrying 6 year old lttle girls, and the waging of religous indoctrination to spread the word by violence and brainwashing.

Our earth reveals its inspired truth in its fossil record, our DNA and revelations of discovery in the nature of reality that disproves ”divine texts” language predates Babel, christ was bearing false witness to claim he was casting out devils - when disease is caused by parasitic organisms, Ice core drilling in antarcitca and glaciers around the world prove rain did occur on the earth before Noah, many millions of years and therefore the rainbow was not a unique sighting.

We must grow up and cast off our silly ridiculous beliefs if we are going to develop rational reasonable concepts of living and what morals are reasonable in their capacity to cause harm or wellbeing in all their extrapolations, without the ridiculous notion that religion instills this in people.

It is Human nature to empathise with our fellow people and friends and family; dont be so silly.

To quote Sam Harris - Athiests are simply people who have read the religous texts, investigated the religous claims on offer and found them to be totally ridiculous.

Religions cause more harm than any good that they constantly presume to espouse to do.

May I add that animals are capable of great empathy and caring and they have no religion. They will often adopt the orphaned offspring of different species even species that are their natural enemy. The idea that religion is needed for anything is absurd.

You are very right that atheists have all those moral values which the religion claims to inculcate in the people. Rather I would say that they love the humanity more than the religious people claim to.

Religion is not an absurdity. Every religion tells us to love humanity. Every religion inculcates in us the basic human values.

Every religion teaches hate and intolerance, it has built in mechanisms for ensuring that people will always feel superior to others and abuse those they feel superior to. {That whole...”My religion is the ONLY true religion!” bullshit guarantees that the killing and hate will never stop}

If basic human values are for men to subjugate and degrade women, kill their neighbors and steal their land and belongings, enslave the men and rape women that they kidnap from those neighbors, tax into starvation anyone who does belong to their religion etc. then you have a lot to learn about basic human values.

The very idea that religion has anything to do with being human is absurd, people were human hundreds of thousands of years before religion was invented and they managed not to kill each other into extinction.

It's really sad to see that people blame religion for subjugation of women. No, religion is not responsible for this. Even science has not come to any conclusion on the issue of existence or non existence of God. Religion has played an important role in regulating the society.

Nuya Bidness

The reason is because RELIGION IS responsible for the subjugation of women! According to religion, god hates women and only put them on the earth to be used and abused by men.

”I asked them why one read in the synagogue service every week the ”I thank thee, O Lord, that I was not born a woman.” ”It is not meant in an unfriendly spirit, and it is not intended to degrade or humiliate women.” ”But it does, nevertheless. Suppose the service read, ’I think thee, O Lord, that I was not born a jackass.’ Could that be twisted in any way into a compliment to the jackass?” -Elizabeth Cady Stanton

That pretty much sums up all religions, constantly insulting and degrading to women, but we are supposed to believe that we just misunderstood.

As for regulating society, you have that right!!! It was invented to give one group power over another. Give one group power to exercise ultimate cruelty on those it saw as inferior. So it is doing exactly what it was intended to.

The only thing that has saved humanity from religion is the cherry picking of some of the least offensive parts and turning a blind eye to most of the most savage parts.

If you can pick and choose, then you never needed religion in the first place.
