Arctic riches are increasingly becoming the bone of contention for the five nearby nations who have the UN granted rights on the area. Arctic has the rich coffers of oil and gas that can, to a great extent and for a long time, solve the energy demands of the evermore energy hungry nations. However, the desire to possess the maximum area is resulting in a rift that can result in a vital conflict. So, with the argument gradually heating up, it remains to be seen whether the resources will be successfully exploited without indulging in a vital conflict. As the two most powerful yet hostile nations are engaged, it can mess up the whole world.

If there is oil and gas, how do the Russian hope to get out of the sea bed. They don't have the technology to do that nor the money They will have to rely on western oil companies and banks. If that is the case, everyone is a winner.

America has experience in drilling in Alaska and far offshore, they just choose not to do it because of environmental concerns. If the Russians have no concerns over environment, they can do the drilling and sell to the countries that don’t want to get their hands dirty. I say let them try, it is not easy as talking about it.

are you crazy or what are you to sing in praise of US without knowing the actual reality. if you talk about the greenhouse emission, US is the biggest polluter. It's US who never ever was concerned about the environment. there is no logic that can deny it, not even US.

This is never possible without the conflict. If it were, world would have never faced any kind of conflicts.

Russia and US can never come together so raising this question in itself is not worth.

It doesn't matter if they come together or not. The real issue would be that should we drill the earth again even after realizing that it is having adverse effects on the environment?

Well, seriously speaking, I doubt. it will engage the surrounding countries in a vital conflict that will result in total chaos. Oil is too lucrative... you know! it will never let peace come in as long as it is available in any part of the world.

The big Russian bear is raising its head above the parapet yet again!
Look out and be afraid...be very afraid. don't poke the sleeping bear as we are not talking about the weak Russia that emerged from the break-up of the USSR. God help us if should this escalate.

yes you are right as long as the nations are serious about averting any war threat emanating from the arctic that won't be only within the nearby nations but spill over and over...

russian claims are ridiculous! you see history and what you will know is Russia is best in finding causes for war. They have now found a new one. they have no UN accepted rights on the area...they should pack and go or else they will face something similar to 1991 never to rise again.

this is where the misunderstanding comes in. I will call your answer and the root cause of the conflict. If Norway and Us can have rights on the are that is no man's land as of now, then there is no logic to deny Russian share to the vital energy resources...World should not deny the russian rights to avoid the vital conflict

There would definitely be some chaos for the resources. None of the countries would easily agree for a compromise.
