Raluca Batanoiu raises an interesting debate in his article pointing out the fact that the Olympic movement cannot dilute the hostility amongst nations. Is it a war by proxy? The deep-rooted nationalist sentiments lead to more or less a war by proxy. The medals mean more than a territory.

forget olympics any other sporting event like world cup etc. india-pakistan cricket or hockey matches had always been virtual wars where losing was not an option till a few years back. in football argentina-brazil matches were wars too... then don't forget the dutch-english soccer matches and all other games.

Disagree
I don't think that the Olympics is a war zone and the athletes in various disciplines are soldiers of different divisions fighting a multi-pronged war in different theaters. If it is so, I welcome such a war where only sweat is shed and there is no blood.

Sports have always being used as a proxy for wars. In the height of the Cold War the 1972 World Chess Championship in Reykjavík, Iceland between Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union and Bobby Fischer of the United States. The match then went on to become a legend and entered folklores.
It is no different today.
