Are action movies glamorizing violence?

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has ruled out an Ad by Angelina Jolie for breaching the code for television. Jolie was shown firing a bullet towards the viewer during the advert which quoted press reviews of the film describing her performance as “blazingly sexy” however, ASA concluded the ad could be seen to condone violence by glorifying or glamorising the use of guns.

These things seem to lead to apathy I think. If I've noticed anything in students I work with that love violent films, it is not that they are more violent, but that they don't care about the violence that others suffer. Their sense of the need to strive for justice for others is less than that of students not exposed to these kinds of materials.

No matter what the movies show modern society will continue to deteriorate until our court systems improve,,We can no longer afford to slap criminals on the wrist and let them go,,punishments should be swift ,,,and highly deterant,,take a life ,,,lose a life,,rob someone,,no second chances,,go to jail,,like in the old days ,,Crime is CRIME,,PERIOD,,none of this ,,varying degrees of murder,,or robbery first second and third,,what the F*** is that? im all for tattooing,,child molester on a criminals face just before he gets out of prison the fist time,,im all for going back to public executions,,,TELEVISED!! you wanna stop crime,,,thats how you do it,,Movies are not the cause,,actually many movies are the effect!!!

Agree with Charlotte. Movies are not the cause, actually they are the effect!

Ads and films always cash in on the emotions and sentiments of the public and its natural for them to depict only whats prevalent in the society, or at least a concept has been formed in the minds of the public.

So its totally wrong to say that ads and movies are glamorizing violence. The truth is, the makers of ads and movies know that violence is the easiest way to attract attention of the public... because violence is the only common denominator that binds all the human race irrespective of the geographical location or ethnicity and culture.

Its high time that we do some thing to erase violence from society and stop blaming the media for glamorizing or supporting violence.

I feel that movies are more often the cause. There are many movies that have inspired youths to engage in violence.Sometimes it’s ”reel” effecting the ”real” and on many occasions it’s ”real” emulating the ”reel”.

In case of movies like Lage Raho Munnabhai, the effects are positive like people newfound love for non-violent resistance.Well,it’s rare that a movie-Lage Raho Munnabhai- is successful in inspiring people to embrace positive values. All the time the present age movies are imposing wrong set of values in young minds.

That’s propaganda,,,have you SEEN the changes,? no and you wont,, Movies dont change who a person is,,his parents do,,his teachers do,,his neighborhood does,,,you want better young people you need better adults raising them,,teaching them right from wrong,,but most parents today are out partying and drinking and letting their kids bring themselves up its easier to pop them in fromt of a tv than to occupy their young minds with out door activities,,,when we were little it was cowboys and indians,,but we did not grow up violent,,cops and robbers,,,al capone on every channel in some movie,,but we are not the violent ones,,its modern society that doesn’t care for its children,,its modern LAWS that prevent going to bed without supper for some infraction,,,or going to your room for some broken rule OR GIVING YOUR KID A BEATING that will make them more afraid to break the rules because they know they will be in trouble when they get home,,why didn’t we get pregnant at 13? because our parents would KILL US,,,or at least we were convinced they would,,,NOPE its not the movies,,,ITS THE PARENTS!! Why blame the movies? Really, i don't get it. If a movie about Hitler is to inform us who the person was so this does not mean in any case that there would be people in the audience to re-live Hitler. I think movies are sheer entertainment and Al capone scenarios are no way the product of movies on Al capone.

If this is to be believed then i think people are only interested in looking at the negatives. If movies can encourage our behavior then why is to so that people are not moved by watching movies on saving the environment or for that matter movies on poverty like Slumdog Millionaire. If movies can really encourage violence then it should also encourage all the aspects of human behavior.

It is extremely difficult to distinguish between the relatively small long-term effects of exposure to media violence and those of other influences.” In other words, it is almost impossible for researchers to determine whether a given individual is violent because of media violence or because of other factors, such as substance abuse, childhood trauma, or having violent and/or antisocial parents
We are a flawed human and one that never wants to take responsibility for our flawed mental makeup, thus we blame and then more blame

ok mommy coddle the world and you get what you got now,,im sorry but we,, the older generation grew up with out helmets for bikes and TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED THE 1930’s, 40’s, 50’s, 60’s and 70’s!! First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant. They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can and didn’t get tested for diabetes. Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-base paints. We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, locks on doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had baseball caps not helmets on our heads. As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, booster seats, seat belts or air bags. Riding in the back of a pick up truck on a warm day was always a special treat. We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle. We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and no one actually died from this. We ate cupcakes, white bread, real butter and bacon. We drank Kool-aid made with real white sugar. And, we weren’t overweight. WHY? Because we were always outside, playing...that’s why! We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on. No one was able to reach us all day. And, we were O.K. We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times,we learned to solve the problem. We did not have Playstations, Nintendo’s and X-boxes. There were no video games, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD’s, no surround-sound or CD’s, no cell phones, no personal computers, no Internet and no chat rooms. WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them! We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents. We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever. We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes. We rode bikes or walked to a friend’s house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them. Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn’t had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!! The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law! These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers problem solvers and inventors problem solvers and inventors ever. The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas. We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all. If YOU are one of them? CONGRATULATIONS! Author Unknown,, In a message dated 3/19/2009 3:02:57 P.M. Nevertheless that’s no reason to stop enjoying the technologies the last 25 years offered us. The only thing is to carefully use them...I am aware nice sad but who can control that all while educating your kids.
We all know that kids want to experience more intense than we did and am afraid we cannot prevent that from happening. So we need to steer it and support it by pushing it the correct direction. I can recommend Video Glasses which will intensify the experience so you ”only” have to focus on the Sw you provide them.
Look at http://www.orangedwarf.com for a nice collection of these Video Glasses. Also Camera Glasses for recording of your favorite moments...let yr kids play with these things instead of playing with violent games.
